[Dec 2021] Chicago Style Improv Workshop by Chicago IO Alum Don Cooper

🤐 There is no secret to consistently good improv, it’s a matter of practice, practice, practice but you have to be practicing consistently good improv.

  • Decisive openings (Who, What, Where Immediately!)
  • The scenes are always about teasing a character with the first thing you do or say
  • Making the scene only about the relationship between the characters
  • Reacting through your character consistently
  • Heightening the stakes

Don Cooper with Improteca is organising a week-end improv workshop to work on the fundamentals.

Ever wonder why ‘Friends’ is so consistently funny? Because it adheres to all the things above.

  • We always know who they are, where they are and what they’re doing
  • The characters are well defined and their relationships, not about someone who’s not in the scene
  • Commitment to choosing a character with the first thing you do or say.
  • Commitment to choose Joey always reacts like Joey etc.

The only difference in improv is that we don’t have a script but we can consistently improvise the same types of scenes by following the same guidelines.

There is no secret to consistently good improv, it’s a matter of practice, practice practice but you have to be practicing consistently good improv.
